Twenty-nine-year-old Karen Baaba Sam, at the centre of an alleged domestic violence case and child custody dispute, has stated that contrary to the narrative being pushed by her ex-partner, Nana Kwadwo Adjei, through some media outlets and law enforcers, she is in court fighting for her rights and those of her 5-year-old daughter.
In an exclusive interview following a ruling by the Achimota District Court, presided over by His Worship Prince Osei Owusu on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Ms. Baaba Sam expressed her determination to protect her daughter within the framework of the law.
The court granted a motion filed by her lawyers to set aside what she described as an “illegally” obtained arrest warrant, allegedly secured by Nana Kwadwo Adjei with the assistance of certain elements within the Ghana Police Service.
During the hearing, her lawyers argued that the warrant lacked legal basis and should be revoked.
Senior State Attorney David Beecham, representing the state, did not oppose the application, leading the magistrate to set aside the arrest warrant.
Consequently, Ms. Karen Baaba Sam is no longer at risk of arrest and can continue her daily activities without fear.
Despite this legal victory, Ms. Baaba Sam has expressed concerns over misleading reports published in newspapers such as the Chronicle, Day Break, Metro Lens, and Supreme on February 6, 2025, falsely accusing her of defying court orders regarding the custody of her daughter.
She clarified that she is legally challenging these orders, which she believes were obtained under dubious circumstances, much like the now-voided arrest warrant.
“In January 1968, long before you, Kwadwo Adjei, were born, it was established that a court ruling made without proper notification to a party is null and void,” she asserted.
“The orders Nana Adjei lied about, paid for, and obtained on January 10 and 14, 2025, will face the same fate as his illegal arrest warrant.
He can buy as many as he wants to spread falsehoods, but he cannot manipulate the law and justice,” she added.
Ms. Baaba Sam further alleged that her ex-partner is actively engaging in misinformation through paid media campaigns, emphasizing that all those involved will ultimately be held accountable under the law.
BackgroundKaren Baaba Sam publicly revealed the years of physical, verbal, and emotional abuse she allegedly endured at the hands of Nana Kwadwo Adjei on January 20, 2025.
She recounted a harrowing experience that began in 2016 and escalated into a bitter custody battle over their daughter, Ohemaa.
Initially, their relationship appeared promising, but by 2018, when she became pregnant, cracks began to show.
The first incident of domestic violence, according to Ms. Baaba Sam, occurred in December 2018 when Nana Adjei returned home intoxicated. When she questioned his whereabouts, she was met with physical assault, including slaps and kicks to her pregnant belly.
“I was more scared for my unborn child than for myself,” she recalled, adding that a friend intervened after she managed to call for help.
Despite repeated incidents of violence, reports filed at the East Legon Police Station yielded no action.
According to Ms. Baaba Sam, her ex-partner bragged about his influence within law enforcement, making it impossible for her to seek justice.
Her breaking point came in April 2023 when she encountered Nana Adjei with another woman at a restaurant. When she attempted to leave with him, the woman humiliated her publicly while Nana Adjei stood by.
That night, he allegedly assaulted her once again in the presence of their daughter.
“He also assaulted two visiting family friends from Germany who tried to intervene.
During the chaos, he kicked our daughter, causing her to fall and cry,” she recounted.
Determined to escape, she ended the relationship in December 2023.
However, Nana Adjei allegedly reacted with threats, demanding the return of all gifts he had given her, including their daughter’s school car. Fearing further abuse, she moved out in February 2024.
On her first night in her new home, she was robbed at gunpoint, with all valuables stolen except for a specific necklace—coincidentally the same one Nana Adjei later demanded she return. Authorities suspected the attack was orchestrated by someone close to her, leading to her being placed under police protection.
As the legal battle over child custody and allegations of domestic violence continue, Ms. Baaba Sam remains resolute in seeking justice and ensuring her daughter’s well-being.
