Police arrest two in dramatic highway chase after carjacking in Kumasi
A swift intelligence-led operation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters led to the dramatic arrest of two suspected carjackers along the Accra-Nsawam Highway on Saturday.
The incident began on Friday, November 7th, when a robbery and carjacking was reported at Mpatasie, near St. Anthony Hospital in the Ashanti Region.
The victim's unregistered Hyundai Tucson was stolen by the assailants.
According to police sources, the CID Headquarters in Accra intercepted the report from the Bohyen District and immediately activated its intelligence network.
Information gathered indicated that the suspects had fled Kumasi and were heading towards Accra in the stolen vehicle.
A dedicated team from the Unit, while conducting follow-up enquiries on Saturday, spotted the unregistered Hyundai Tucson with about four occupants along the Ofankor Barrier–St. John’s stretch.
"The team swiftly moved to intercept the vehicle and effect the arrest," a police statement read.
"Sensing danger, the suspects attempted to flee with the car.
Upon realising they were surrounded, they abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot."
A foot chase ensued, leading to the arrest of two suspects.
During the pursuit, one suspect sustained a gunshot wound and the other sustained minor injuries.
The two other occupants managed to evade capture.
The arrested individuals have been identified as:
Issaka Jamal, 30
Kwadwo Badu, 40
Both were rushed to the Police Hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition and responding to treatment.
Police have retrieved the stolen Hyundai Tucson and several key exhibits, including:
A customised number plate with the inscription "Congo-1-24"
A cash sum of GH₵5,900.00
Various documents and personal effects
The police have confirmed that efforts are currently underway to apprehend the two remaining suspects who are still at large.
