2024 WASSCE results: Finance Minister must appear in Parliament over gov’t’s failure to release funds to WAEC – Minority
The Minority in Parliament is demanding the presence of the Finance and Education Ministers in the house to address a debt exceeding GHS 100 million owed to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
According to the Minority, this debt is severely affecting WAEC’s operations, including delays in equipment maintenance, examiner payments, and the timely release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, the Ranking Member of the Education Committee, expressed serious concern about the detrimental impact of the debt on the education sector.
“Information available is that the target date of 19 December for the release of the 2024 results will have to be delayed because examiners are threatening to hold on to their scripts if payments are not made to them,” Mr. Nortsu-Kotoe stated.
He cautioned that any delay in releasing the WASSCE results could disrupt plans for students aiming to enrol in tertiary institutions in January 2025.
“Mr Speaker, in conclusion, I wish to urge you to invite the Ministers for Education and Finance to appear before the house and explain why the government is unable to release funds to enable the release of the 2024 WAEC results on the target date of 19 December 2024. So that our children and wards are not denied the opportunity of entering tertiary institutions in January 2025,” he appealed.
