Free SHS will stay, be well-funded if I win Dec. 7 polls – Mahama
Mahama pledges to strengthen free SHS with dedicated funding if elected
John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy will continue under his leadership, with a strong focus on securing consistent funding to ensure its sustainability.
Speaking to Christian leaders in Kumasi on Monday, 11 November 2024, Mr. Mahama dismissed accusations that he would scrap the policy, labelling such claims as a “political gimmick” meant to deceive the public.
“Free SHS has come to stay,” Mr. Mahama declared, reinforcing his commitment to the programme. He stressed that while Free SHS has increased access to education, it is crucial to provide adequate funding to ensure the programme’s long-term success.
“We must ensure it’s well-funded to improve its quality and keep it going,” he added.
The NDC flagbearer's statements underscore the party’s dedication to the policy, with a particular emphasis on improving its funding and quality. While both the NPP and NDC support Free SHS, they differ in their approaches to enhancing the programme's effectiveness.
The NDC flagbearer also highlighted the importance of quality education, assuring that proper funding would result in improved educational outcomes for Ghanaian students.
