Gov't takes over Savannah College of Education

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), has officially taken over the Savannah College of Education into the public college system.
In a press release, the Ministry described the move as a milestone that underscores the government’s commitment to expanding access to quality teacher education and strengthening Ghana’s educational framework.
The decision follows a thorough review and due diligence process, confirming that the institution meets all requirements for transitioning from a private college to a fully recognized public College of Education.
The absorption is expected to enhance teacher education by expanding access, improving training quality through state-funded infrastructure and faculty development, and promoting equity by providing resources to underserved areas.
The Ministry of Education commended GTEC, Traditional Authorities, and the management of Savannah College of Education for their roles in facilitating the transition.
Stakeholders, including students and faculty, have been urged to embrace the change and support efforts to establish the institution as a center of excellence in teacher education.
The release noted that the move aligns with Ghana’s broader educational reform agenda, which aims to build a highly skilled workforce of educators. The transition is subject to the establishment of a GTEC Governing Board
