Heavy rainfall causes flooding on KNUST campus, disrupts academic activities
A heavy morning rainfall caused the Wewe River to overflow its banks on Thursday, flooding the main link between the halls of residence and lecture halls at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The flooding disrupted vehicular movement, blocked key pedestrian walkways and affected academic activities for several hours.
The rising water overtopped the bridge across the Wewe River, making major roads and pathways on campus inaccessible during peak morning hours.
As a result, thousands of students were stranded, while commercial drivers travelling to neighbouring communities including Kotei, Ayeduase, Emina, Boadi and Apemso were forced to use alternative routes.
University security personnel were deployed to manage traffic, assist students and commuters, restrict access to high-risk areas and direct people to safer routes.
KNUST also deployed large shuttle buses capable of navigating the flooded sections to transport stranded students between their residences and lecture halls.
By early afternoon, water levels had receded, allowing private and commercial vehicles to resume using the affected roads. Students were also able to access lecture halls through the reopened walkways.
