KNUST campus still a security zone – REGSEC
The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has reminded the management and students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) that the institution still remains a security zone.
“On behalf of the Ashanti Regional Security Council, I write to inform you that the declaration of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology as a security zone is still in force and must be upheld until further notice,” a letter signed by Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah said.
Last year, the campus was declared a security zone following a series of riots by the students that resulted in school property worth GHS1.7 million ($310,218) destroyed.
The students were incensed by the maltreatment meted out to them by the university's security and other policies such as the conversion of male halls to mixed halls.
Ahead of the upcoming Hall week celebrations on campuses from 26 February to 11 April, REGSEC cautioned the students not to breach the peace on campus.
The statement said: “Anybody, who directly or indirectly engages in activities that may disturb the peace on the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology campus shall be sternly dealt with in accordance with the law. Breaches will attract the maximum legal security penalty or sanctions associated.”
