Keep schools open despite strike – GES to head teachers
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed all regional and district directors of education to ensure that school heads keep schools opened and closely supervise all children despite the fact that teacher unions have declared a strike.
The teacher unions began a strike action yesterday, Monday, 4 July 2022, over government’s refusal to pay their Cost of Living Allowances (COLA) in the wake of increasing hardship in the country.
The teachers have been demanding COLA since the beginning of the year.
In a statement, the teachers said they cannot bear the economic hardship anymore.
The strike involves both teaching and non-teaching staff.
Reacting to the strike action, the GES said it has invited leaders of the teacher unions for a discussion on the way forward while advising parents to remain calm as they resolve the issues.
