Muslim community renews call for Islamic SHS in Volta Region
Muslim leaders in the Volta Region have renewed their call on government to support the establishment of an Islamic Senior High School (SHS) in the region, citing the absence of such an institution despite a growing Muslim population.
Alhaji Alfa Anas Hamidu made the appeal in an interview in Ho, saying the lack of an Islamic secondary school in the region has created challenges for Muslim families seeking faith-based education for their children. He said the establishment of an Islamic SHS would improve access to secondary education while also providing learning grounded in Islamic values.
According to him, the community has already met key requirements for the project, including securing land and completing necessary documentation, and is now awaiting government support to proceed with construction.
He said the proposed school would serve students from across the Volta Region and nearby communities, helping reduce the need for parents to send their children outside the region for Islamic-based secondary education.
Alhaji Hamidu commended the Member of Parliament for Ho Central, Richmond Edem Kofi Kpotosu, for engaging the community and pledging support toward the project.
He said the MP has shown commitment to advancing efforts to establish the school.
The appeal comes amid broader calls for equitable access to education and improved infrastructure for minority religious communities in the region. Muslim leaders expressed hope that government intervention would help move the project forward and ensure access to quality secondary education within their communities.
