Prioritise welfare of teachers in rural areas- Ex-DED to gov't

The outgoing District Education Director(DED) for Kwahu Afram Plains South in the Eastern Region, Joseph Donkor, has made a passionate appeal to the government to prioritise the welfare of teachers in rural communities, stressing that such support is crucial for improving education outcomes in underserved areas.
Speaking at his retirement ceremony held in Tease, the district capital, Mr Donkor lamented the lack of basic amenities and incentives for teachers working in remote locations.
He noted that the harsh conditions contribute to low morale and high attrition rates among educators.
“To retain teachers in rural communities, there must be a deliberate effort to provide improved living conditions and motivational packages,” he said.
“Investing in teacher welfare is key to tackling the challenges of rural education and enhancing the quality of teaching and learning.”
His remarks come after 34 years of dedicated service in the education sector, during which he played a pivotal role in promoting access to education in difficult-to-reach communities.
Williams Frimpong, spokesperson for the Eastern Regional Education Directorate, commended Mr Donkor for his exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to education.
He encouraged other district directors in the region to emulate Donkor’s work ethic and dedication in order to uplift the standard of education across the Eastern Region.
