TEWU serves notice of withdrawal of service over withheld allowances

The Tertiary Education Workers Union (TEWU), along with the Senior Staff Association of the University of Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), has issued a two-week ultimatum to the government to restore their withheld allowances.
These allowances, the non-payment of which is causing hardship for their members, need to be reinstated by October 15, 2023, according to the unions.
Addressing a press conference in Accra, GAUA National President Dr Beth Offei-Awuku said the non-payment of these allowances is putting undue hardship on their members.
According to the union president, if their demands are not met, they will have to withdraw their services in all public universities across the country.
In a related development, Organised Labour is advising its members to follow the proper procedures when planning demonstrations or protests, which includes seeking approval from the police.
Mr Joshua Ansah, the Deputy Secretary-General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), emphasized the importance of complying with the law and stated that they typically inform the police about their demonstrations at least five days in advance. He believes that if all the necessary arrangements are in order, the police should grant approval for their demonstrations or strikes, as they are a law-abiding organisation
