Teachers strike biting hard on academic work in Ashanti Region

Academic activities in various basic and senior high schools across the Ashanti region have grounded to a halt due to the ongoing strike action by pre-tertiary teacher unions.

The strike, declared on Wednesday by the three major unions—GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT—is centred on grievances related to their conditions of service and other pertinent issues.

Despite some members initially reporting to work unaware of the strike, they promptly ceased activities upon receiving notification from their respective unions.

Consequently, classrooms in schools such as Yaa Kyaa Girls JHS, St. Peter's R/C Primary and JHS, and Asem Cluster of Schools were noticeably deserted.

In the absence of regular teachers, a handful of trainee teachers on internships and national service personnel took charge of academic activities.

Meanwhile, those teachers who had shown up were observed engaging in conversations while students occupied themselves with various recreational activities both within school premises and on the streets.

Speaking to Class 91.3 FM's Elisha Adarkwah, some students voiced their concerns and urged the government to address the teachers' grievances promptly to facilitate their return to classrooms.

Mr Joseph Baba Atindaana, the Ashanti Regional Secretary for the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGAT), reiterated their stance, emphasising that the unions would not resume work until their concerns were satisfactorily addressed by the government.
