UCC elects first medical student as SRC President
The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has made history with the election of Abraham Norman Nortey, a 4th-year medical student, as the 62nd President of the Student Representative Council (SRC).
Norman secured a decisive victory with 53.4% of the total votes cast, defeating his rivals Team Ben Essien, Team Appiah Kubi, and Team Stana in a closely contested race.
Norman’s election is groundbreaking on several fronts.
He is the first medical student in UCC’s history to ascend to the SRC presidency, a feat that reflects the growing inclusivity and dynamism of student leadership at the institution.
His campaign achieved unprecedented victories across multiple halls of residence, including KNH, SRC, Superannuation, Valco, Oguaa, Adehye, Graduate, and Medical/PSI.
Remarkably, Norman made history by becoming the first candidate to win elections in the home halls of his opponents, an extraordinary accomplishment in UCC’s political landscape.
Adding to his trailblazing record, Norman brings a wealth of leadership experience, having served as SRC President at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and as Graduate President of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Public School.
His election at UCC makes him the first individual in Ghana to lead the student body in two different public universities at the highest level.
Norman’s campaign slogan, “God has done it,” resonated deeply with students and reflected his resilience, strategic acumen, and unshakable faith.
His victory is a testament to the trust and hope the student body has placed in him to champion their interests and foster positive change.
Final results released by the Office of the Dean of Students showed Norman capturing 53.4% of the votes, followed by Team Ben Essien with 22.1%.
The remaining votes were split between Team Stana (Daniel Henaku Ofori) and Team Appiah Kubi.
As Norman prepares to take office, the UCC community is filled with optimism for his tenure.
Expectations are high for his administration to deliver on its promises and set a new standard of leadership for the university.
