UPSA names state-of-the-art hostel after Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh
The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has honoured Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate for the 2024 elections, by naming a newly constructed hostel after him. This recognition celebrates his transformative contributions to education in Ghana, particularly during his tenure as Minister for Education.
The naming ceremony, held on the UPSA campus, highlighted Dr. Prempeh’s instrumental role in supporting infrastructure development across tertiary institutions.
The state-of-the-art facility, now known as the Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Hostel, is expected to house over 5,000 students, addressing critical accommodation challenges on campus and fostering a conducive learning environment.
Dr. Kofi Ohene Konadu, Chairman of the UPSA University Council, commended Dr. Prempeh’s visionary leadership, emphasizing his dedication to expanding access to education and enhancing infrastructure.
“This hostel is a testament to Dr. Prempeh’s relentless commitment to creating an enabling environment for tertiary education.
His efforts as Minister for Education have left a lasting legacy in institutions like UPSA,” Dr. Konadu stated.
Vice Chancellor of UPSA, Prof. Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey, echoed these sentiments, describing Dr. Prempeh as a trailblazer in Ghana’s education sector.
“Dr. Prempeh’s contributions, from spearheading the Free Senior High School policy to championing infrastructure development, have transformed lives.
Naming this hostel after him immortalizes his impact on education in Ghana,” Prof Amartey remarked.
The recognition marks another milestone in Dr. Prempeh’s longstanding relationship with UPSA.
In 2021, the university conferred on him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree for his sterling leadership and commitment to advancing education in Ghana.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Prempeh expressed his gratitude to UPSA for the honour.
“This recognition is a shared celebration of everyone who believes in education as a tool for transformation.
I remain committed to supporting institutions like UPSA, which play a pivotal role in Ghana’s national development,” he said.
He further pledged to continue advocating for policies that expand access to quality education and enhance the infrastructure of learning institutions nationwide.
The event, attended by dignitaries, faculty, students, and representatives from educational institutions, underscored UPSA’s commitment to recognizing leaders who champion education.
The new hostel not only symbolizes progress for UPSA but also solidifies Dr. Prempeh’s legacy as a key driver of educational transformation in Ghana.
Dr. Konadu encapsulated the sentiment of the occasion, stating, “Effective leadership is the foundation of milestones like this. Dr. Prempeh’s support for education infrastructure goes beyond funding—it’s about empowering institutions to meet the growing demands of modern education.”
