Housing and Works Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has revealed that the Greater Accra Region currently hosts 10,720 housing units at various stages of development, in a bid to alleviate Ghana's housing deficit.

During an inspection conducted by the Ministry on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah underscored the severity of Ghana's housing challenge and emphasised the need to bridge the gap.

With an urban population of 58 per cent and a housing deficit of 1.8 million units, addressing this issue has become a critical developmental imperative.

The ongoing housing projects span key areas such as the Tema Development Company (TDC) Affordable housing enclave in Kpone, Community 22, Pokuase, Tessano, and Lartebiokorshie.

Detailing the scope of these initiatives, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah outlined progress across various sites.

The TDC Affordable Housing enclave has seen approximately 1,072 units completed, with plans for an additional 800 in phase IV.

Community 22 boasts around 300 completed units, with a future phase to bring the total to approximately 600.

Pokuase, despite facing delays, anticipates around 8,000 units, while Tessano and Lartebiokorshie contribute around 320 and 100 units, respectively.

The Minister stressed the government's commitment to diversifying housing options, catering to different income levels with single-family homes and subsidized 1, 2, and 3-bedroom units.

Collaboration with private sector developers and stakeholders remains pivotal in expediting construction and bringing these units to market promptly, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah affirmed.

Furthermore, the government continues to explore additional avenues to tackle the staggering housing deficit, aiming to provide affordable housing solutions for Ghanaians.
