A/R: Communities in Kwanwoma district march, block roads over bad roads
The chiefs and residents on the stretch from Ohwimase to Foase through to Nweneso in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region today, Tuesday, 22 June 2021, blocked the main road to demonstrate against the government over the deplorable nature of their roads.
The demonstration took place at Atwima Takyiman, where the angry demonstrators blocked the main road with cement blocks and wooden structures and prevented drivers and commuters from using it, causing a gridlock.
A team of police and military personnel was deployed to the scene to ensure the road was cleared for the free flow of traffic.
The demonstrators said they are disappointed with the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), which they claim to have always voted for.
They said the road was awarded to Asabea Construction in 2018 but has been abandoned after the gutters were constructed, describing the project as 419.
They told Class News’ regional correspondent Elisha Adarkwah that the deplorable and dusty nature of the road has collapsed companies and businesses in the area while some people have contracted diseases.
The communities that demonstrated include Ohwimase, Denchemuoso, Takyiman, Boko, Twedie, Foase Trebuom, Nweneso among others, led by their assembly members.
The Odikro of Atwima Takyiman, Nana Afriyie Takyi, who represented Atwimahene, said the chiefs in the area are not respected by their subjects because of the deplorable nature of the road.
He expressed disappointment with the NPP government, which he said they have always voted for.
Nana Takyi pleaded with President Akufo-Addo to ensure the road is fixed.
