A/R: Fire sweeps through 18-block school, destroys 6 rooms
Fire has gutted six classrooms at St. Lisbert International School at Abuakwa Housing in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The blaze started from the Assistant Headmaster's bedroom, a portion of the classroom block converted into dormitories, and spread to other rooms around 5 am, a time the students had woken up and were preparing to attend lectures.
According to the firefighters, the students had to run to safety when the fire started.
The firefighters swiftly responded to distress calls and combatted the inferno from further spreading.
In all, six out of 18 rooms were burnt.
The fire commander for the Nkawie District Fire Station, DOIII James Akowuah, said explosions of gas cylinders in one of the affected rooms, made the fire spread fast.
He said the cause of the fire is not yet known but an investigation has been commenced into the disaster.
No casualties were recorded.
