The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Elizabeth Sackey, has paid a visit to the homes of the late Nat Nunoo-Amarteifio and Solomon Ofei Darko, both former mayors of Accra, to commiserate with their families following their demise.

The late Nat Nunoo-Amarteifio, and Solomon Ofei Darko, kicked the bucket on December 20th and 31st 2021 respectively after a short illness in Accra. 

Mrs Sackey, accompanied by former mayor of Accra and Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma South Constituency, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije; and the Chief Executive of the Coastal Development Authority (CODA), Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Assembly members as well as Heads of Departments of the AMA, visited the residences of the two late mayors on Wednesday to also sign the books of condolence opened in their memory. 

Speaking through a linguist, the first female Mayor of Accra announced plans by the Assembly to hold a candlelight vigil and open a book of condolence in memory of late former mayors next week. 

She eulogized the late former Mayors and expressed her condolences to the bereaved families and pledged support to give them a befitting burial. 

"A giant has fallen, the Lord knows best, Hon Ofei Darko was God-fearing. I know that his memories would keep ringing in our hearts. Nevertheless, we know God knows why. We console ourselves that he is with the Lord. May he rest in perfect peace,” she wrote in the book of condolence.

At the residence of the late Nat Nunoo-Amarteifio, the mayor of Accra wrote: “A giant has fallen, a mighty man is gone, Oh my uncle, my daddy, my friend, my counsellor, so soon you have left us, well God knows why and we cannot question Him... Daddy Rest in Peace."

Mr Amarkai Amarteifio, who spoke on behalf of the family of the late Nunoo, expressed appreciation to the mayor and her team for mourning with them. 

He announced that the late Amarteifio would be interred on January 21, adding that the body would be laid in state for filing past at the Lashibi Funeral Home.

Interdenominational church service would be held after the interment at the Ridge Church on January 23, 2022. 

At the residence of the late Ofei Darko, the family informed the mayor that funeral arrangements would be announced in due course. 

The AMA boss and her delegation, as custom demands, presented assorted drinks and water to support the pre-burial arrangements of the two late former mayors.

Nat Nuno-Amarteifio was appointed mayor between 1994 and 1998 during former President Jerry John Rawlings’ administration.

He was born in 1943 and died at the age of 79 years.

Solomon Ofei Darko was born on 26 January 1936 and died at the age of 85.

He served as AMA boss under the Kufuor administration from 2001 to 2003.
