Benneh murder: Go to High Court for bail – Judge tells lawyers
The Kaneshie District Court presided over by Her Honour Mrs Eleanor Kakra Barnes Botchway, has recommended that lawyers of the two accused persons who have been charged for murdering the University of Ghana law lecturer, Professor Emmanuel Yaw Benneh, go the High Court if they want bail.
The two, James Nana Womba, 26; and Opambour Agya Badu Nkansah, are on provisional charges for murder and conspiracy.
The accused persons had asked the court to grant them bail.
But according to the court, its jurisdiction is limited to the committal proceedings, adding that if they want bail, they should head to the High Court.
The case has been adjourned to 26 October 2020.
The accused persons have been remanded into police custody.
At the last court sitting, three out of the four persons who were arrested in relation to the murder, were discharged.
The discharged suspects were Christian Pobee, 32, cleaner; Isaac Botchwey, 41, houseboy; cleaner; and Adams Mensah Mansur, 52, gardener.
They were provisionally charged with murder and conspiracy.
The prosecution, led by Inspector Ebenezer Teye-Okuffo, withdrew the earlier charge and substituted with a new one.
He told the court that their investigations did not incriminate the three persons and prayed the court to discharge them.
He said Womba, upon investigations, confessed to conspiring with Nkansah and two others who are on the run, to commit the crime.
The prosecutor then asked the court to remand them as investigations were still ongoing in the case.
The charges were read to them but their pleas were not taken.
The late Professor Benneh was found dead in his room on 12 September 2020 at his Adjiriganor residence.
He was found in a pool of blood with his hands tied.Source: Classfmonline.com
