COVID-19: "Don't go to church, it's a trap, you'll die"

South Africa's opposition politician Julius Malema has warned South Africans not to go to church in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic as any attempt to lure them to church is a "trap".

Malema urged religious leaders not to open churches if they care about the well-being of their people.

He advised members of his Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party not to attend church, saying, "it's a set-up".

Speaking at a press conference, Malema said: "I want to make a plea to religious leaders do not open your places, you claim to occupy the high moral standard, you're the ones who should be saying your members should not come to church. We pray but members of the EFF, supporters of the EFF, do not go to church, it's a trap, you're going to die, it's a set-up, do not go to church".

In Ghana, the government has indicated that it intends easing the restrictions imposed by President Nana Akufo-Addo, as part of measures instituted by the government to deal with the spread of the virus.

The President, during the Eid celebrations, said: “We have to find a way back, but in safety, for we cannot be under these restrictions forever.”

Already, Christain bodies have put together a proposal for the government to clearly spell out modalities under which they can safely resume church service without endangering the lives of congregants as the COVID-19 rages on.
