Closed season: Emelia Arthur engages fishers in Ahanta West on Marine Protected Areas

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur, on Tuesday led a high-level delegation to seven coastal communities in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region as part of ongoing national consultations on the proposed establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
Accompanied by the Municipal Chief Executive of Ahanta West and members of the MPA Committee, the Minister engaged directly with fishers and community leaders on issues relating to sustainable fisheries management and marine conservation.
The communities visited during the outreach included Egyambra, Miemia, Awona Beach, Princess Town, Aketakyi, Cape Three Points, and Akwidaa.
Madam Arthur emphasised the importance of stakeholder involvement in the decision-making process, noting that the Ministry is committed to an inclusive, science-based, and community-led approach to fisheries governance.
She explained that the proposed MPAs aim to ensure the long-term sustainability of marine resources, protect critical habitats, and support the livelihoods of coastal populations who depend on fishing.
The outreach forms part of a broader effort by the Ministry to build consensus around fisheries reforms and promote environmentally responsible practices in Ghana’s coastal regions.
