'Coup plotters’ denied bail – again

General News
Coup plotters denied bail again

The nine persons accused by the state of allegedly plotting to destabilise the Akufo-Addo government have been denied bail by an Accra High Court.

Explaining the reasons for denying them bail, the trial judge, Justice George Buadi, on Monday, 11 November 2019 indicated that none of the accused persons had been detained beyond two months and, so, their lawyers’ prayer for bail could not be granted.

He also noted that the arrest and detention of the nine in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations were not arbitrary or unlawful.

In his view, the accused persons also have the capacity to interfere with investigations into the matter if granted bail, citing a situation in the past in which junior officers of the Ghana Armed Forces overthrew the Constitution under similar circumstances.

The lawyer of the suspects, Mr Victor Adawudu said his clients needed to have their freedom as the investigation and trial proceed.

The accused persons were arrested after a 15-month-long surveillance.
