Defence Minister calls for calm amid renewed tensions in Bawku

Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has appealed for calm and restraint in the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict, urging all parties involved to prioritise peace and dialogue.
In a brief statement posted on his official Facebook page on Sunday, July 13, 2025, Dr. Boamah emphasised the need for cool heads to prevail as tensions continue to simmer in the troubled area.
“We have once again called for restraint in the Bawku chieftaincy conflict,” the Minister stated, reaffirming the government’s commitment to resolving the protracted dispute through lawful and peaceful means.
The Bawku conflict, rooted in longstanding chieftaincy disagreements, has periodically erupted into violence, disrupting lives and posing security challenges in the Upper East Region.
The Defence Minister’s call comes amid reports of renewed clashes and growing concerns over public safety in the area.
Security forces have been deployed to maintain law and order, while traditional leaders and government officials continue efforts to mediate and de-escalate the situation.
Dr. Boamah’s call for calm is part of broader appeals by government and civil society to end the cycle of violence and allow peace-building efforts to take root in the conflict-prone municipality.
