Democracy Hub calls for urgent medical attention for activist Barker-Vormawor as health declines in custody
Democracy Hub, the organisation behind the recent three-day #StopGalamseyNow and #ReoccupyJulorbiHouse demonstrations, is urgently appealing to authorities to address the deteriorating health of activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor.
In a statement issued on Thursday, 10 October 2024, the group announced that Mr. Barker-Vormawor was rushed to the Police Hospital earlier that day due to serious health concerns.
"We are gravely concerned for his well-being and urge the authorities to act swiftly in addressing his health needs," Democracy Hub stated.
Medical professionals are currently conducting tests to evaluate his condition and determine if further hospitalisation is necessary.
Emphasising the critical nature of the situation, Democracy Hub reiterated the need for prompt action: "This situation is critical, and we hope the authorities will respond with the urgency it demands."
Mr. Barker-Vormawor, a key figure in Democracy Hub, has been in police custody since Monday, 23 September 2024, following his arrest during the protests against illegal mining.
His health has reportedly worsened on two occasions since his detention, leading to increased concern among supporters and the public.
Despite multiple appeals to the High Court in Accra for his release, Mr. Barker-Vormawor remains the only protester still denied bail, while the other 52 activists arrested alongside him were granted bail on October 9, 2024.
