Don’t rely only on oil revenue, find other means to fund Free SHS – PIAC to gov't
The Chairman of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), Prof. Kwame Adom-Frimpong has advised the government to find alternative sources to fund the Free Senior High School policy, aside from the oil revenue.
The government is funding the free Senior High School policy with the oil revenue since its implementation.
Prof. Adom-Frimpong said it is good that the government is funding the free SHS policy with the oil money but advised that it finds additional sources in funding it in case of any unforeseen contingency sets in.
He noted that in case there is no oil money today, it will be a problem for the free SHS policy to run.
Prof. Adom-Frimpong was speaking in an interview with Class News’ regional correspondent Elisha Adarkwah on the sidelines of the PIAC forum on the 10 years of the management and use of the petroleum revenues organized in the middle belt of the country held in Kumasi today, Tuesday, 21 July 2021.
He urged the government to find additional means of funding the free SHS else it will be difficult for it to run in case there are no oil revenues.
Prof. Adom-Frimpong also said because of the COVID-19 pandemic, revenue generation from the oil was reduced by approximately 44 per cent in 2020 as compared to 2019.
He said the country has generated $6.5 billion from oil extraction from 2011 to 2020.
