East Legon accident: Puffy-eyed Bishop Salifu Amoako drops to knees, pleads for mercy from bereaved families
Amidst tears, Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako has asked for mercy from the family of the victims of the East Legon accident that ended the lives of two teenagers.
The 16-year-old son of the Alive Chapel International founder and overseer has been identified by police as the suspect driver who caused the fatal accident at the Mensah Wood Avenue T-junction, East Legon, Saturday, October 12, 2024.
“It’s me Salifu Amoako speaking. I plead for your mercy. I ask for God’s divine comfort for you, also,” Bishop Amoako said in a viral video as he wept. “I plead with both bereaved families, be comforted. God strengthen you.”
Dressed in black, Bishop Amoako petitioned the Ghanaian public and church leaders, local and international, to plead with the families on his behalf.
“I can’t explain myself,” he said, visibly dumbfounded and puffy-eyed. “This tragedy has left me shaken. I’ve cried my strength away.”
“I’m begging the entire family,” he emphasised, dropping to his knees. “God comfort and strengthen you. Be sustained and receive courage. I plead with the mothers and fathers of the children, be strong.”
At the site of the accident, a candlelight vigil was held Friday night, October 18, for the the 12-year-olds who were burned to death when a Jaguar vehicle rammed into the back of the Acura vehicle they were riding in at the back seat. While their driver and two co-passengers were successfully rescued, Maame Dwomoh Boaten and Justine Agbenu were not so lucky.
Bishop Salifu Amoako, his wife Mouha Amoako and one other person have been charged with permitting an unlicensed person to drive. They are all currently on a GHS50,000 bail with two sureties, each. They will reappear in court on October 30.
