Ejura erupts in chaos following death of suspect in Police custody
Fresh details have emerged regarding the violent unrest that erupted in Ejura, Ashanti Region, on Saturday, January 11, 2025, resulting in the destruction of the Ejura Police Station and officers' quarters.
The crisis began after the death of a young Muslim Zongo man in police custody on Friday, January 10, 2025.
The man was reportedly arrested on allegations of purchasing a stolen phone, while the alleged seller of the phone remained at large.
Eyewitnesses claim the suspect was found dead in his cell under unclear circumstances.
The situation escalated when the police failed to notify the deceased’s family of his death.
Instead, they reportedly transported his body to the Mampong morgue without the family’s consent.
When relatives visited the police station to inquire about his case, they learned of his death, sparking widespread anger and outrage among Zongo residents.
In a swift and forceful reaction, aggrieved residents stormed the Ejura Police Station, setting it ablaze along with the officers’ quarters.
Reports indicate that all suspects in police custody were freed during the chaos.
Military personnel were deployed to the area to restore order, but tensions remain high as the community demands justice and accountability for the young man’s death.
Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Ejura Police Command have so far been unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, community leaders and opinion leaders are appealing for calm as investigations into the incident commenced.
