The Greater Accra Regional Peace Council will embark on an advocacy campaign to eradicate vigilantism and promote peace in the region ahead of the December 2020 general elections.

A statement issued by the Greater Accra Regional Peace Council on 20 September 2020 indicated that the campaign, in collaboration with the Danish Embassy, is aimed at ensuring violent-free and credible presidential and parliamentary election.

The UN General Assembly declared 21 September as International Day of Peace by the United Nations (UN), a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.

This year's theme is “Shaping Peace Together.”

According to the statement, in 1984, in commemoration of the annual International Day of Peace and in solidarity with the UN, a non-governmental organisation, “Pathways to Peace” inaugurated the “Minute of Silence” at 12 noon in each time zone resulting in a “Peace Wave” around the world as “a shared practical act of peace building.” 

The Greater Accra Regional Peace Council therefore entreated all individuals, organisations and communities to partake in the observance of the “Minute of Silence” tomorrow 21 September 2020.

The National Peace Council is an independent statutory peace institution established by the National Peace Council Act, 2011 (Act 818) to promote peace in the region by facilitating and developing mechanisms for conflict prevention, management, resolution and to build sustainable peace in the country.
