The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) has announced a planned tree management exercise along the Atomic-Kwabenya Highway, set to take place on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

According to an official statement issued by GAEC, the exercise has been approved by the Executive Director of the Forest Services Division and will involve the felling of eight mahogany trees and six Leucaena trees. Additionally, 43 mahogany trees on both sides of the highway will be pruned.

The Commission stated that the operation will be undertaken with support from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and other key stakeholders.

The Ghana Police Service will also be on hand to assist with traffic control and ensure smooth vehicular movement during the exercise.

The move is part of what GAEC describes as a coordinated effort to manage roadside vegetation and maintain safety along the busy highway corridor.

However, the announcement comes amid growing public concern over the recent spate of tree felling in Accra, particularly along green corridors like the Atomic-Kwabenya stretch, which environmentalists consider vital to the city's urban forest cover.

Some activists have criticised what they view as the indiscriminate removal of trees without adequate environmental safeguards.

Despite the controversy, GAEC says it is committed to working with stakeholders to ensure the exercise is carried out responsibly.

Residents and motorists using the Atomic-Kwabenya Highway are advised to plan ahead and cooperate with traffic personnel during the operation.
