GRASAG optimistic about Mahama's 24-Hour economy
The National President of the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Emmanuel Owusu, has expressed optimism regarding the proposal for a 24-hour economy put forth by the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.
Mr Owusu believes this policy has potential to bring about significant transformation on Ghana’s market landscape.
The initiative, aimed at encouraging certain businesses and companies to operate round-the-clock, is envisioned to enhance productivity, competitiveness, and job creation.
Speaking at the unveiling of the GRASAG research report on “The 24-Hour Economy,” Mr Owusu shared his insights, expressing hope that the recommendations outlined in the report would be given serious consideration should Mr Mahama be re-elected.
He emphasised that the adoption of a 24-hour economy would particularly impact information technology and internet access, which are essential components of the digital era.
According to Mr Owusu, implementing the 24-hour economy would not only boost productivity and job creation but also improve service delivery, align with Ghana’s socio-economic goals, spur innovation, attract foreign investment, promote sustainable growth, and position Ghana as a global competitor.
In his remarks, Mr Owusu stated: “For prospects which in a way I’ve mentioned, it will also have some impact on information technology and now we are in a digital world and most of the things we do are driven by information technology and of course, once you are implementing a 24-hour economy, it will require that you improve the internet access.”
He added: “Implementing a 24-hour economy will increase productivity, create jobs, and enhance service delivery, aligns with Ghana’s socio-economic objectives. It will stimulate innovations, attract foreign drive investment, foster sustainable growth and position Ghana as a global competitor."
Mr Owusu expressed the collective sentiment of GRASAG members across the country, asserting their belief that the 24-hour economy could bring about transformative changes in the nation. He also expressed the hope that if elected, Mr. Mahama would give due consideration to these recommendations.
