Ghana has formally reinforced its commitment to global peace and disarmament by depositing its instrument of ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) at the United Nations, officially declaring itself a nuclear-weapon-free state.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who led the process, commended both Cabinet and Parliament for their unanimous ratification of the treaty.

Addressing the development, Mr. Ablakwa said Ghana has consistently championed nuclear disarmament across successive political administrations, staying true to the vision of its first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who convened the historic 1962 World Without the Bomb Conference in Accra.

“This is a proud moment for Ghana. We have been unwavering in our call for a world free of nuclear weapons, and today we demonstrate once more that commitment before the international community,” he stated.

During the UN event, Mr. Ablakwa also met with Melissa Parke and Seth Shelden of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) — the organisation awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for its pioneering advocacy towards a nuclear-free world.

The Minister reaffirmed Ghana’s determination to help “end global impunity” and contribute to building a safer, more secure world.
