Ghana to record dumsor in Nov if Sunon Asogli maintains shutdown – CEMSE

General News
Dumsor is back in N ovember

The Executive Director of the Centre for Energy, Sustainability and Environment (CEMSE), Mr Benjamin Nsiah has warned of a potential load-shedding crisis known in Ghanaian parlance as Dumsor in November if the Sunon Asogli Power Plant, which generates approximately 530MW, does not come online.

The energy expert highlighted that Ghana could lose about 1,000MW of power generation next month due to outages at several key plants.

The expected loss includes 100MW from CENIT, 200MW from the Kpone Thermal Power Plant, and 70MW from the Tema Thermal Power Plant 2, resulting in a total shortfall of 370MW.

When combined with the 530MW from Sunon Asogli, this adds up to a significant 1,000MW reduction from the national grid.

‘This situation would leave Ghana with a total dependable capacity of 3,855MW in November, which is nearly equivalent to the country's peak demand of 3,700MW’ he explained.

Compounding the issue, the maintenance of ENI's facilities could further reduce supply to some of the dependable capacities, putting additional pressure on the grid and raising concerns about Ghana's ability to meet its growing power demands, he said.

The CEMSE director urged the government to take immediate action by bringing idle generation capacities back online and mobilizing financial resources to import heavy fuel oil (HFO), Light Crude Oil (LCO), and natural gas to prevent the looming power crisis.

Without these interventions, the country risks experiencing significant load shedding in the coming months, he stressed.

He spoke in an interview with Accra-based UTV.
