Ghana to roll out chip-embedded passports from April 28 – Foreign Affairs Minister

Ghana will begin issuing chip-embedded passports from Monday, April 28, 2025, as part of efforts to modernise and secure its travel documentation system, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced.
The upgraded passport—commonly referred to as an e-passport—features a microprocessor chip that securely stores the holder’s biometric data and photograph.
It also incorporates advanced security features, including both visible and hidden anti-fraud elements, designed to safeguard against tampering and identity theft.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, the Minister explained that the transition to the new passport format aims to significantly improve document security, reduce the role of middlemen in the application process, and enhance overall transparency.
“This is a major step forward in improving the integrity of our passport system,” Ablakwa stated.
“The chip-embedded passports will help us meet international standards while also protecting the identities of Ghanaian citizens.”
The initiative forms part of a broader passport reform agenda being rolled out by the Ministry throughout the year.
Additional reforms include the introduction of 24-hour passport application centres, home delivery services via courier, real-time electronic tracking of passport applications, and a 30 per cent reduction in application fees.
“These reforms are not only about innovation,” the Minister noted, “but about accessibility, efficiency, and fairness for all Ghanaians.”
The rollout of the chip-embedded passport places Ghana among a growing number of countries adopting e-passport technology to enhance travel security and streamline border control procedures, he concluded
