KIA luggage theft: We’re taking steps to probe concerns – GACL

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has assured the public of its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of operations at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), following recent concerns about thefts from unaccompanied luggage.
The GACL's response comes after an article highlighted numerous complaints from travellers at the KIA baggage complaints office, where many expressed frustration over missing items from their luggage.
The publication called for stricter access controls to prevent unauthorized entry into areas where passenger luggage is stored.
Reacting to this in a statement issued on Sunday, 16 June 2024, management of the GACL indicated it had taken note of the concerns raised in the publication and is taking the needed steps to “immediately investigate and address it.”
It emphasised that measures are already underway to restrict access to non-travellers and unauthorised personnel in security zones, such as baggage hold areas.
The GACL also warned that any individual found guilty of theft or extortion would face severe legal consequences.
“Anyone found culpable in any act of thievery and extortion which negatively impacts our cherished passengers and additionally brings the image” of the GACL into disrepute will “be dealt with in accordance with the full rigors of the law,” the statement added.
