Local gov't c'ttee tours landfill sites
The Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development has begun a nationwide tour of the various landfill sites across the country to inspect ongoing works.
The committee, after the visit to the landfill sites, also visited ongoing Integrated Recycling and Composite Plant projects which are being constructed by private waste management company Zoomlion Ghana Limited in collaboration with the government of Ghana.
Members of the committee were accompanied by the Works and Housing, Environment, Science and Technology & Innovation as well as Finance Committee members.
The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Local Government and Rural Development, Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi expressed worry over the situation at some landfill sites as he said it is important the government turns its attention to helping solve the challenges.
He, however, applauded Zoomlion Ghana Limited for the construction of recycling plants across the country.
The Ranking Member of the Local Government and Rural Development Committee of Parliament, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, expressed the need for the government to improve the payment of service providers who will convey the rubbish to the recycling sites.
The General Manager of Waste Landfills, Mr Peter Kwei Dagadu, also indicated that the project will add value to the system and, therefore, urged Ghanaians and residents to embrace it, as he says the project will be completed by July this year to help fight the challenge of sanitation.
