Minority warns of crisis in fishing communities, calls for urgent government action
The Minority in Parliament has sounded the alarm over worsening conditions in Ghana’s fishing communities, accusing the government of neglect and logistical failures that threaten food security and livelihoods.
In a press release marking National Farmers’ Day on Friday, December 5, the Minority highlighted the crippling non-supply of premix fuel in Keta and other coastal communities, leaving fishermen’s boats docked and families struggling.
“A government that cannot ensure the reliable distribution of a fundamental input like premix fuel has failed in its most basic duty to sustain a critical sector. We stand in solidarity with the fishermen and women of Keta and all coastal and inland fishing communities,” the statement said.
The Minority also called for expanded subsidies, enforcement against illegal fishing, modernisation of fisheries through AI-driven tools, and improvements in landing sites, cold chains, and logistics to boost productivity.
The opposition warned that, unless urgent measures are taken, the neglect of fishing communities will continue to erode Ghana’s food security and coastal economies
