The General Secretary of the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG), Mr Richard Kofi Jordan, has announced that mortuary workers across the country will go on an indefinite strike starting Thursday, September 27.

The decision follows years of unresolved grievances, including the lack of adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), unpaid salary arrears, and unfulfilled promises regarding bonuses and financial clearance for new recruits.

 Mr. Jordan expressed disappointment with the Ministry of Health and other relevant authorities for their failure to address the workers' concerns despite several meetings and negotiations.

One of the major issues cited by Mr. Jordan is the critical shortage of PPEs, which he said has been a long-standing problem.

"Our primary concern is the lack of PPEs, which is non-negotiable.

We need them to safely carry out our duties, but right now, we don’t have enough, and it’s seriously affecting our work," he said.

He emphasized that PPEs are crucial for the protection of workers who operate in hazardous environments, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The strike is expected to disrupt operations at mortuaries across the country, as the workers push for better working conditions and the settlement of outstanding financial obligations.
