Obuasi: Operation Vanguard cop arrested for robbing man of GHS10K; two others at large
A police officer detailed to anti-galamsey taskforce Operation Vanguard, Inspector Godwin Mensah, has been arrested for robbery at Memerewa Number One near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
He was stationed at Agona Swedru.
According to a police report, the suspect and his colleague Lance Corporal, who is now at large, both dressed up in police uniform and armed with AK-47 assault rifles, went to the house of the victim, Mr Thomas Lee, and carried out the robbery.
They first arrested the victim for allegedly trading in gold without a licence, handcuffed him and subjected him to beatings.
The two cops then rummaged the victim’s home and stole a cash sum of GHS10,000.
Subsequently, they took the 38-year-old victim hostage and drove off with him in a waiting yellow and white Daewoo Matrix taxicab with registration number AC 9310 – 18.
Upon the distress call of the victim’s wife, the Obuasi Mile 9 patrol team gave the suspects a chase and later intercepted them but the driver and the lance corporal managed to escape.
A sum of GHS5,800 of the stolen money was retained from the arrested cop.
The police are on a manhunt for the two others.
