Soldiers cracking down on galamseyers in Savanna Region

The Savannah Regional Security Council (REGSEC) conducted an early morning operation yesterday targeting illegal mining activities, known as galamsey, along the Black Volta.

The operation resulted in the eviction of numerous illegal miners from the river and the destruction of equipment, including Chanfang machines, generators, tricycles, and other tools used in illegal mining activities.

Saeed Muhazu Jibril, the Savannah Regional Minister and Chairman of REGSEC, explained that the council is determined to eliminate all illegal mining operations in the region.

"You can clearly see the level of destruction they have caused to our natural water bodies, and we are committed to addressing this issue to protect our environment," he stated.

The Regional Minister assured that the operation will continue until all illegal miners are removed from the Savanna Region.

"We’ve just started, and we will ensure that we get rid of all the galamseyers in the Black Volta," Jibril added.

The crackdown is part of broader efforts to protect the region’s environment and restore its water bodies, which have been severely impacted by illegal mining activities.
