Tenants union condemns Henry Quartey-led Frafraha demolition exercise
The National Tenants Union (NATUG) has expressed its displeasure about how the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Henry Quartery led the Security Council to bulldoze some structures at Adenta-Frafraha.
Unauthorised structures on the 200-acre property belonging to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) were all downed a few weeks ago by some security personnel led by the minister.
NUTAG, in a statement, however, said: “We are appalled by the cruel destruction of properties, source of income, and education and the failure to put measures in place that seek to provide a sustainable source of livelihood for the victims of demolition”.
The statement, signed by General Secretary Frederick Opoku and dated June 29, 2022, in Accra, further said that the “inhumane demolition exercise has imposed a lot of hardships on the people of Frafraha and rendered a large number of breadwinners homeless and unemployed”.
According to the statement, the minister failed to consult extensively with the various stakeholders before embarking on the exercise.
“We want to take this opportunity to remind the government that the demolition carried out in recent times is a breach of international conventions and treaties signed by Ghana in the year 2000.
“We further want to remind the government under President Nana Addo that Ghana has rectified the Convention on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights which prohibits Ghana from undertaking such misguided demolition exercises which amount to forced eviction”, the statement argued
