Use ADR instead of court – Legal Resources Centre

General News
Legal and Project Officer for Legal Resources Centre Rita Nupe Demuyakor

The Legal and Project Officer of the Legal Resources Centre (LRC), Ms Rita Nupe Demuyakor, is advocating the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in settling cases.

She spoke to Class91.3FM’s Ashanti regional correspondent Elisha Adarkwah on the sidelines of a 4-day training workshop organised by the LRC on ADR mechanisms and administrative procedures for new staff of the Legal Aid Commission.

The ongoing workshop being held in Kumasi is on the theme: “Making justice accessible to the poor and vulnerable in Ghana”.

It is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

According to Ms Demuyakor, ADR will not only reduce the caseload and backlog in court but will ensure justice is not delayed and denied.

She indicated that many people have been remanded because they could not afford to pay the services of lawyers to represent them in court.

The ADR, she noted, comes at no cost, unlike the court system, which requires filing fees and footing lawyers’ bills among others.

The ADR, she further noted, does not only give rise to an amicable settlement of cases but brings about confidentiality in the adjudication of cases.

The LRC Legal and Project Officer, therefore, urged the public, especially the less privileged, to use the ADR in cases that are not cumbersome, in settling, instead of going to court.
