GA/R: LaDMA, GAYO strengthen capacity of Environmental Health Officers
A Non-Governmental Organization, Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) in partnership with the La-Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA) in the Greater Accra Region(GAR) has put together a capacity building training programme for some one hundred Environmental Health Officers.
The initiative which falls under the Zero Waste Accra and Sustainable Plastic Waste Management Projects was in line with President Nana Akuffo Addo’s vision of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa.
Participants were educated on health and safety practices associated with waste management, practices and handling waste as well as hazardous substance identifications, leadership and environmental laws on plastic waste management.
Project Manager for Green Africa Youth Organization, Madam Betty Osei Bonsu, believes that equipping Environmental Health Officers with the requisite knowledge on waste management will help improve sanitation in the country.
“We are hoping that, at the end of the day, they will be able to effectively and efficiently handle their duties as Environmental Health Officers in the municipality.
This training encompasses plastic waste management laws, health, safety and leadership,” she told Class News.
“We are hoping that they will be able to muster the courage to safely protect themselves whiles trying to promote other individuals in the community,” she added.
Deputy Director at the La Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly, Henry Asumah asserts that the capacity building for Environmental Health Officers is significant for national development.
He said: “We think the training will go long way to ensure that our Environmental Health Officers are well equipped with the knowledge to be able to sensitize the public on what they are supposed to do, so far as Environmental Health is concerned.”
The La- Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly for the past year has been working with the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) with a focus on environmental sustainability and community development, on the “Zero Waste Accra project”.
This is aimed at enhancing citizen participation in waste management and creating green jobs.
The one-day capacity building for Environment Health Officer is also linked with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grant Programme, of the UNDP to implement a Sustainable Enterprise-Driven Solutions to Plastic Management Project and SESA Recycling at the La-Dade-Kotopon and Ledzokuku municipalities.
