Health Ministry summons KATH CEO over suspension of emergency admissions
The Ministry of Health has summoned the Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, to explain the hospital’s recent decision to suspend new admissions at its Accident and Emergency Centre.
In a letter dated June 3, 2026, and signed by Chief Director Desmond Boateng on behalf of the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Ministry said it had taken note of statements circulating on social media and comments made by KATH’s Head of Public Affairs on television confirming that the emergency centre was unable to admit new cases.
The ministry stated that the decision was contrary to a directive by President John Dramani Mahama that hospitals should not turn away emergency cases.
“You are by this letter requested to appear before the Hon. Minister of Health on or before 12 noon on Thursday, June 4, 2026, to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against you for contradicting a clear directive of the H.E. President of the Republic of Ghana,” the letter said.
The ministry has directed the KATH CEO to appear before the Health Minister by noon on June 4, 2026.
The development follows KATH’s temporary suspension of new emergency admissions due to congestion at its Accident and Emergency Centre. The hospital has since resumed admissions after reducing the backlog of patients.
