KATH resumes emergency admissions after easing congestion
The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has resumed admissions at its Accident and Emergency Centre after temporarily suspending new cases due to overcrowding.
The centre, which was designed to accommodate 37 patients, had been handling 61 admitted patients with an additional 40 awaiting treatment before the suspension.
Deputy Medical Director Yaw Opare Larbi said the hospital has since discharged and transferred some patients, creating room for new admissions.
He explained that following the suspension, KATH held discussions with referring health facilities, leading some hospitals to retain their patients while others agreed to receive emergency cases that would otherwise have been referred to KATH.
According to Dr Larbi, the arrangement helped reduce pressure on the facility and enabled the hospital to resume admissions.
He also called for the construction of more emergency centres across the country and urged the completion of health facilities such as the Afari Military Hospital and the Sewia Regional Hospital to help ease congestion at KATH.
