Korle-Bu Anaesthesia Department commends Newmont Ghana for major ICU equipment
The Head of the Department of Anaesthesia at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Andrews Kwabena-Adade, has expressed deep appreciation to Newmont Ghana for donating critical care equipment to the hospital, while urging other corporate organisations to support the country’s healthcare system.
Dr. Kwabena-Adade made the appeal during the presentation of intensive care equipment by Newmont Ghana to the Department of Anaesthesia and the Paediatric Oncology Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
The donation, valued at more than GHS 2 million, included ICU ventilators, patient monitors and arterial blood gas (ABG) machines, and is expected to significantly enhance the delivery of specialised care at the facility.
He noted that as a 2,000-bed tertiary referral hospital, Korle-Bu ideally requires a centralised 20-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to effectively meet growing clinical demands.
Currently, the hospital’s ICU and High Dependency Unit (HDU) capacity stands at only eight beds, with much of the existing equipment installed during a retooling exercise over a decade ago.
“Most of the equipment we are using is ageing.
Although we periodically update the software to keep it functional, there is an urgent need for more durable equipment that can serve reliably for at least five years,” Dr. Kwabena-Adade said, adding that the demand for anaesthesia and intensive care services has increased, particularly for neurosurgical, maternity and emergency procedures.
He assured that the newly donated equipment would be put to optimal use to improve patient outcomes and strengthen critical care services at the hospital.
The Country Manager of Newmont Ghana, Mr. Danquah Addo-Yobo, said the ventilators, monitors and anaesthesia machines go beyond their monetary value, describing them as life-saving tools that will help improve patient safety and recovery.
He explained that the donation reflects Newmont Ghana’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and its support for quality healthcare delivery in Ghana.
Newmont Ghana indicated that the support forms part of its broader health-sector interventions under its corporate social responsibility programme. Hospital management, on their part, used the occasion to appeal to other corporate bodies to support healthcare delivery, noting that government resources alone are inadequate to meet the increasing needs of major referral hospitals.
With the installation of the new equipment, the Department of Anaesthesia is expected to enhance patient safety, improve surgical efficiency and strengthen emergency care outcomes at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
The donation ceremony was attended by the Country Manager of Newmont Ghana and his team, members of hospital management, Dr. Andrews Kwabena-Adade, Chief Nursing Officer Madam Gifty Banie, Dr. Anita Yawson, and the Administrator of the Anaesthesia Department, Madam Constance Ofori.
