NHIS not collapsing, reports of collapse ‘inaccurate’ – NHIA

The Management of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIA) has said it appreciates the call by Dormaahene Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu II, on government to give the Scheme the full amount of the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) collected.
It however refuted reports that the scheme is on the verge of collapse as a result of the NHIA not receiving the full amount of the NHIL, therefore depriving healthcare providers of their rightful claims.
In a statement issued on Thursday, 23 November 2023, the Corporate Health Directorate of the NHIA put on record that “no government during the Fourth Republic has ever provided the NHIA with all the NHIL collected albeit enshrined in law – a situation that can be improved upon.”
According to the NHIA, it however strongly disapproves of the narrative that “seeks to create an impression of a collapsing NHIS,” as reported by a section of the media.
It indicated that: “The NHIA has consistently paid healthcare facilities an average of One Hundred and Fifty Million Ghana Cedis (GHS150 Million) every Thirty (30) days especially over the past two years,” a phenomenon that the scheme stressed has “not occurred this frequently since the inception of the Scheme some twenty years ago.”
“We wish to state unequivocally that the impression created by the said story is inaccurate and unfortunate,” the statement added,
The NHIA was reacting to publications by GhanaWeb suggesting that the scheme was on the verge of collapse as a result of the NHIA not receiving the full amount of the NHIL and the Dormahene was threatening legal action against government.
