The Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives Ghana, has entered into an enhanced agreement with insurance firm Enterprise Life to cushion nurses and midwives in the country.

The move, according to the union, is to better the lot of the health professionals who usually are at the forefront of healthcare delivery.

Speaking to Class News at the signing ceremony on Wednesday, 29 September 2021, the National President of UPNMG, Mr Maxwell Oduro Yeboah, said: “This is an enhanced policy from the first one that we had because the previous one did not cover the children, critical illness and so on”.

“Now, the hospitalisation cover has been increased: four children from each parent has been added to the cover, our spouses, our parents and most importantly, critical illnesses”, Mr Yeboah explained.

In recent times, he added, “we have had a lot of complaints and reports of nurses having cancers and so on so for Enterprise to agree to cover critical illness is a great deal for us”.

He said “for those who are still not members of the Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives Ghana, we encourage them to come because it is only when we all come onboard that we can change the narrative”.

“So, we are encouraging them to also come and benefit from what we are offering, the hire purchase, the loan, the housing, everything”.

For her part, the General Manager in charge of Operations at Enterprise Life, Solace Odamtten-Sowah, said the partnership between UPNMG and the insurance firm will go a long way to help the health workers focus on their core mandate without worrying about what happens when they get hospitalised or lose relatives.

She further entreated other unions to emulate UPNMG to provide relief for their members.

The Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UPNMG), is an association for nurses and Midwives in Ghana duly registered at Registrar-General's Department.

The union attained a labour union status on the 14th of December 2018 and was certified to operate as a trade union by the Chief Labour Officer.

It aims at improving the economic and social status of nurses and midwives in the country through the mobilisation and judicious utilisation of resources.
