The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has ordered the immediate closure of the Tamale Technical University Hospital, citing "highly compromised" safety and infection prevention standards, along with operation under an expired license.

The directive, announced in a public notice, mandates the facility to cease operations effective Friday, 7th November 2025.

It will remain closed until critical safety gaps are fully addressed.

The decision follows a multi-pronged investigation into the hospital's practices.

According to HeFRA, intelligence reports containing video footage and pictures initially raised alarms.

These reports were later corroborated by a site visit conducted by the agency's Compliance and Enforcement directorate on Monday, 3rd November 2025.

The investigation concluded that the hospital posed "serious concerns for public health and safety."

In addition to the closure, HeFRA has imposed an administrative fine of Thirty-Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC 35,000) on the facility for regulatory violations.

The agency has laid out a clear path for the hospital's potential reopening.

The management must:

Fully implement all recommendations provided by HeFRA to rectify the identified safety and infection control failures.

Pay the imposed fine of GHS 35,000.

"Take expeditious steps to regularise its licensing status" with the regulator.

The notice, signed by the Ag. Registrar, Dr. Winfred Korletey Baah, reaffirmed HeFRA's mandate under the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829) and its commitment to "ensuring the safety of the Public through the provision of quality healthcare services."
