SEND Ghana, GAND pushes for mandatory food warning labels to safeguard public health

Civil Society Organisations SEND Ghana and the Ghana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (GAND) are intensifying advocacy for the implementation of mandatory front-of-package warning labels on food products, describing it as a vital measure to protect public health and empower consumers with essential dietary information.
The renewed call was made during the launch of the Advocacy Campaign for Mandatory Front-Pack Food Warning Labels.
Country Director of SEND Ghana, Harriet Nuamah-Agyemang, emphasised the urgent need for food manufacturers to provide clear and visible warnings on packaging to guide consumers in making healthier dietary decisions.
“This campaign is about giving people the power to make informed choices and addressing the growing burden of diet-related diseases in Ghana,” she stated.
To ensure long-term policy impact, SEND Ghana is aligning its advocacy efforts with national development planning processes.
The organisation is actively working to influence the upcoming Medium-Term Development Plan (2026–2030) as well as Ghana’s 2026 national budget, with the aim of embedding food labelling reforms into broader public health and nutrition policies.
The campaign reflects growing concerns about rising obesity and non-communicable diseases in Ghana, and aims to encourage government action on consumer protection and preventive health.
