We’ll monitor Akufo-Addo’s anti-galamsey promises – GRNMA
The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has vowed to closely monitor President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s recent promises to tackle illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
The association stated that it will reassess its position based on the implementation of the President's directives in the coming days.
This declaration follows Organised Labour’s decision to call off a nationwide strike after the President assured the public of his administration’s commitment to addressing the galamsey crisis.
Organised Labour cited the President’s pledges as the reason for halting their planned industrial action.
However, other groups, such as the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), are continuing their protest.
UTAG members, with an overwhelming 77.95 per cent vote, have begun an indefinite strike that took effect on Thursday, 10 October 2024, signalling widespread frustration and maintaining pressure on the government to act against the illegal mining menace.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, 10 October 2024, the GRNMA underscored its decision to monitor the situation closely: “In response to the concerns raised by Organised Labour, The Presidency had directed some actions to be taken. The Association would monitor keenly the implementation of same and advise itself accordingly.”
To demonstrate its commitment to curbing galamsey, the government deployed over 100 soldiers to illegal mining sites in the Eastern Region on October 10.
